QVSD Scholarship Auction in Forks

2011 auctionAuctioning signed baseballs!

There's a major Forks event taking place March 19 & 20 at the Bank of America building, 481 S. Forks Ave. and everyone (residents & visitors alike) are invited to be a part of the fun! The Quillayute Valley Scholarship auction, an annual spring event, brings in thousands of dollars for Forks High School graduates' further education. It's one of the biggest social events of the year in Forks. From 9am to 9pm on Saturday, March 19th and from 10am to 8pm on sunday, March 20th the action will be taking place. Last year (2010) over 900 items were sold and over $64,000 was raised.

The Forks High School graduating class of 2011 is in charge with assistance from a committee of volunteers. Live bidding will take place at the bank building for those two days. Donated items are accepted up to and during the event and every dollar is dedicated to helping students get the education and training to prepare them for the working world. Forks takes pride in its graduates, and in the success of this unique community-supported activity. There is no charge to attend and the fun of bidding can keep one amused all day! Also, plan to eat at the Senior Parent Cafe on-site and make a day of it. A new way to bid this year - log into the folllowing website: http://qvsdauction.com. SEE YOU AT THE AUCTION!

February 11th is the 14th anniversary of 44 foot Coast Guard Motor Lifeboat #44363 capsizing in La Push. Three crewmen perished in an attempt to rescue a man and woman from a capsized sailboat. Killed in the accident were Seaman Clinton Miniken of Snohomish, Petty Officer 2nd Class David Bosley of San Mateo, CA and Petty Officer 3rd Class Matthew Schlimme of Whitewater, Mo. Seaman Apprentice Benjamin Wingo of Bremerton, WA survived. It's not necessary to look as far as the Middle East to find heros. Thank you, USCG. We salute and revere you!

People's Choice!

Lest anyone thinks the Twilight craze has run it's course, the January 4th People's Choice Awards named Robert Pattinson (Edward), Kristen Stewart (Bella), and Taylor Lautner (Jacob) as their favorite "on-screen team" which should dispel that rumor. Twilight Saga Eclipse was also voted by fans as their favorite overall movie and drama. Though the days in Forks are currently dark and wet, fans continue to come see the place that Stephenie Meyer named as their home. The visitor center in Forks continues to greet them (73,000 in 2010) and help perpetuate the fantasy.

Forks Airport Elk

elk at forks airport 10-29-10 4

Across the street from the Forks Information Center on the airport runway, a herd of elk gather daily for weeks at a time, then disappear for months, then reappear. We wonder if they notice all the activity going on at 1411 South Forks Avenue, better known as the VIC. We think it likely some of these things have occurred to them:

*Sure a lot of vehicles going in and out of that parking lot over there. And many of those cars have writing on them, like "Team Edward" or "Telk butts in forks 11-3-08eam Jacob" or "La Push or bust" or "Vampires Rule, Werewolves Drool."

*Lots of lights flasing across the street. What's a "camera?"

*Seems to me there are a lot of youngish visitors climbing out of their cars and squealing. I wonder if they are squealing about me?

*Sure would like to sample the grass over there. It looks greener.

*I don't understand why people over there are always staring at us. Haven't they ever seen a hairy, antlered, grass-munching four-legged animal before?

*I think I'll turn around and let them see how I look from the back
