100 Days to 2010 Olympics in Vancouver

Monday, 26 October 2009 Written by Erik & Cari

Opening day at the 2010 Olympic Games and the following Paralympic Games in Vancouver, BC, Canada, (226 mi/364 km from Forks) is just over 100 days away! And you can feel the excitement building with the Olympic Flame arriving from Greece and the Olympic Torch Relay beginning in Victoria this Friday morning. The Victoria Times Colonist has some good viewing tips if you’re heading up there for the festivities this weekend.

As frequent visitors to Canada, we’re impressed with the circuitous 28,000 mi/45,000 km route the relay follows, hitting out-of-the-way spots like the Queen Charlotte Islands and several locations in Nunavut, including Inuvik, Kugluktuk and Alert. And this is just the warm-up for the actual games!

We’re currently receiving inquiries from visitors planning to attend the Olympics in Vancouver, but who are also considering including a side-trip to Washington to check out locations in our state, including Forks and the West End of the Olympic Peninsula.

While there are several ways to get from Vancouver to Forks, probably the easiest method is by private vehicle, via ferry. Basically, this requires taking the ferry from Vancouver to Victoria, then taking the ferry from Victoria to Port Angeles, and then driving (56 mi/90 km west on US Highway 101) from Port Angeles to Forks, where lodging, restaurants, shopping and other amenities are readily available.

Since we’ve still got 100 days or so until the actual games, be sure to visit the excellent 2010 Olympics website to get in the mood for the real thing. Watching this video, as well as the Skeleton, Snowboarding and Freestyle Skiing podcast videos, among others, really got us charged up!
