Quillayute Valley Scholarship Auction Benefits Local High School Graduates

Saturday, 31 January 2009 Written by Erik & Cari

This year’s Quillayute Valley Scholarship Auction is right around the corner–March 21st-22nd. For those unfamiliar with the auction, it’s really quite amazing–this tiny community pulls together every year to raise sufficient funds to provide a scholarship for every graduate of Forks High School or Quileute Tribal School who applies for one!! And this has been going on now for 45 years, with over a million dollars awarded in scholarships so far, beginning in 1964 with Forks favorite dentist (and Chamber board member/community leader), Dr. Bob Henry, receiving the very first award.

The event takes place at the Bank of America building in Forks, 481 South Forks Ave. (right there on Highway 101 in sunny Downtown Forks) on Saturday/Sunday, March 21-22, 2009, beginning at 9:00 am on Saturday and 10:00 am on Sunday. It’s lots of fun with a near-carnival type atmosphere. Expect tons of delicious food (typically everything from top-notch BBQ and smoked salmon to delicious baked goods to authentic fry bread) along with the thrill of bidding up everything that other folks are trying to buy. It’s not uncommon to see some home-made pies and similar items selling for hundreds of dollars, following frenzied bidding wars.
To get the full effect, you really have to be there in person at the event. It’s probably just about the most fun you can have while still doing something meaningful for the youth of this community. Be sure to get a number, so it’s easier to bid.
Even if you can’t make it to Forks for the event, online access is usually available. Check back for a link, when we are closer to the the date of the event. The link allows you to see the auction items in advance, follow the bidding and to bid from remote locations. Bids can be called in to phone numbers that will also be available closer to the date of the event. Stay tuned!
Another way to participate is to donate items for the auction. Everything—from used cars, to full log truck loads of logs, to potting sheds to, um, Marcia Bingham’s purse (??)—is donated (okay, not voluntarily in the case of Marcia’s purse . . . ) for the cause, with all of the funds going to scholarships. Some of the finest items available at the auction are donated by the talented crew from the Toy Shop at local correctional institution Olympic Corrections Center.
If you have something to donate, please contact Marcia Bingham, who generously volunteers to help coordinate the event every year, at 360-374-2531, email her at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it , or simply send your items to Marcia (to arrive well before March 21st) c/o Forks Chamber of Commerce, PO Box 1249, Forks, WA, USA 98331-1249. Any and all donations would truly be appreciated.
See you at the auction in March!! Everyone in Forks will be there. Let’s make 2009 a successful year for the youth of our community!!
