Tall Ship Visits Neah Bay

Tuesday, 12 August 2008 Written by Erik & Cari

The 257-ft. long “tall ship” Gloria recently stopped off of Neah Bay on its way from area tall ship festivals. The 40-year-old, three-masted ship serves as a training school for naval and marine officers of the Columbian armed forces. Thanks to Chris Cook and the Forks Forum, there’s a well-done slide show of the visit for all to enjoy.

The photos include shots of Makah Tribe Chairman Micah McCarty and Makah elder Ed Claplanhoo who, along with others, were escorted to the tall ship aboard a U.S. Coast Guard vessel. A delegation from the Spanish community in Seattle and Olympia, and Lt. Gov. Brad Owen’s office, led by Spanish Vice Consul Luis Fernando Esteban, joined the Makah delegation. Forks community leaders Bill & Kitty Sperry, who made a presentation on behalf of the Washington Generals association, are also featured in the slide show.

McCarty and Esteban exchanged gifts with Gloria’s Captain J. Sierra on the Spanish-built vessel, speaking of the common heritage of the Columbian, Spanish and Makah people.
The ship departed August 7th, continuing its journey down the West Coast to San Diego.
