Forks Washington on the Olympic Peninsula

Adventure Route Advances

Tuesday, 05 May 2009 Written by Erik & Cari

Words cannot describe our excitement about the progress being made carving out more singletrack on the Adventure Route section of the Olympic Discovery Trail! The Olympic Discovery Trail itself will eventually extend from Port Townsend through Forks and to LaPush and the Pacific Beaches. For those not familiar with the Adventure Route, it’s an off-road trail for mountain bikers, equestrians and hikers, basically connecting the Elwha River, near Port Angeles, and Lake Crescent, where it joins the Spruce Railroad Trail and heads west.

Thanks to everyone, including the volunteer group known as the Thursday Trail Crew and the Clallam County Sheriff’s Chain Gang, for their hard work and commitment to this project. Rob Ollikainen’s well-done article in today’s Peninsula Daily News, Adventure Route Takes Shape, (with photo by Keith Thorpe), describes the progress being made. At this point, 13 of the Adventure Route’s 22 miles, are singletrack. Yee-haw!! Further information about the Adventure Route can be found in our blog post from August 2008.
The Adventure Route is a jewel, particularly for mountain bikers. Dust off those mountain bikes and check out the Adventure Route–see you on the trail!!

how far is it from lapush to the spruce trailhead? and is the adventure trail better in one better than the other: east to west, or west to east? Ange--the trail doesn't (yet) go all the way to LaPush. The distance, though, is probably about 30-40 miles. The Adventure Route is a small "offroad" part of the larger Olympic Discovery Trail, which is eventually going to extend from Port Townsend to LaPush. The ODT itself will be paved, for our roadie friends. While much of the ODT is complete and it's future is very exciting, it does not yet go west of the Spruce Railroad Trail. I don't think the Adventure Route trail is significantly better in one direction than the other. If you just can't decide which way to go and if you like long mountain bike rides, here's my husband's favorite Adventure Route ride: starting from Forks, drive east on Highway 101 to the Fairholm store on Lake Crescent. Turn left on Camp David Jr. Road (at the store) and follow the gravel road to the North Shore Picnic Area. Park and ride from there (continuing down road, along lake) to the Spruce Railroad Trail (this is just because it's easier to park there and it's a good place for a swim when you return). Ride the Spruce RR Trail and then continue past the "other" trailhead (at the Piedmont Road end) of the Spruce RR Trail to connect with the Adventure Route. Watch for the huge sign with "rules" and the turn to the left on the gravel road to continue on the Adventure Route from that end of the trailhead. Ride the entire Adventure Route to where it junctions with Highway 112, near the Junction Tavern in Port Angeles (luckily!) and then return. Although this isn't a very technical ride with lots of steeps, it's a long (nearly 60 miles!) "out and back" ride that is not for beginners. I'm assuming you know this, but it's called the Adventure Route because there are no services along the route, so bring lots of water, food, tools, extra tubes, etc. Hope that helps! ~Cari
