Big Step for Pacific Northwest Trail

Friday, 10 April 2009 Written by Erik & Cari

When people are asked to name one of the world’s finest trails, they often think of National Scenic Trails, such as the Appalachian Trail or the Pacific Crest Trail. Now, after an effort spanning nearly 40 years, the Pacific Northwest Trail has achieved National Scenic Trail status as well.

The 1200-mile Pacific Northwest National Scenic Trail extends from the Continental Divide in Montana, through 3 national parks and 7 national forests, eventually going right through Forks and the West End and on to Cape Alava, along the wild Pacific coast beaches. The trail is popular with long-distance hikers, including the impressive Andy Skurka, who hiked it in 2004-2005 as part of his 7,778 hike across America (in 339 days!) on the Sea-to-Sea Route. Forks is a frequent rest and resupply stop on the PNT and, of course, welcomes all trail users.
Huge thanks to everyone who made this happen, including honorary Forks resident Jon “Uncle Jon” Knechtel, Joan & Duane Melcher and the Pacific Northwest Trail Association, a Forks Chamber member organization. See you on the trail!
