Forks Washington on the Olympic Peninsula

Looking for Adventure?

Most cyclists are familiar with the Olympic Discovery Trail (ODT), which will extend from Port Townsend, right through Forks, and out to LaPush and the Pacific. However, only a few elite mountain bikers have, as of yet, experienced of the outstanding ODT Adventure Route.

The Adventure Route is an incredible off-road ride that extends from near the Elwha bridge on Highway 112 (near the junction of Highway 112 and Highway 101) to Lake Crescent. It’s also popular with equestrians and hikers, so use caution and be courteous. The approximately 25-mile-long route is a mix of very well-built and well-signed singletrack and doubletrack. It traverses beautiful forests with views to the south to the Olympics and to the north over the Strait of Juan de Fuca to Canada’s Vancouver Island.

To access the trail from Forks, it’s often best to combine the Spruce Railroad Trail ride, which follows the shoreline of Lake Crescent. From Forks, head east on Highway 101 until just before Lake Crescent. Turn left on Camp David Jr. Rd., near the Fairholm Store, located on the western shore of the lake. Follow the unpaved Camp David Jr. Rd. to the end and park at the Spruce Railroad Trail trailhead. Ride the Spruce Railroad trail and then continue past the parking area to the beginning of the Adventure Route. You’ll see the ODT signs and directional arrows along the way.
If you’re looking for accommodations, meals, swimming or watercraft rentals very close to the Adventure Route, be sure to visit the Log Cabin Resort (Forks Chamber members), located on the Piedmont side of the Spruce Railroad Trail, on East Beach Road.
We’ve ridden this route several times so far–it’s a blast!! It’s not particularly technical, but it’s awfully fast and awfully fun. And where else are you going to find a near 50-mile out-and-back mountain bike ride like this??? Put some adventure into your mountain biking–check out the ODT Adventure Route today!
