Forks Washington on the Olympic Peninsula

“Twilight” Boosts Peninsula Tourism

Tuesday, 14 October 2008 Written by Erik & Cari

“Vampire Tourism” is the latest craze in Forks and and the rest of the Olympic Peninsula. And it’s working! The Peninsula Daily News reports in this article from Sunday, October 12th, that “the allure of vampire dreams delivered a 48-percent increase in lodging tax revenue for Forks . . . .”

The article, written by Tom Callis, includes quotes from Chamber Director Marcia Bingham, among others. Marcia discusses the near doubling (WOW!!) of lodging tax revenue in September, attributing it to Stephenie Meyer Day. Marcia also points out the benefit to the entire Peninsula, since visitors are often interested in checking out other local attractions while they’re here.
Obviously, the Forks Chamber of Commerce, the voice of tourism in Forks and the West End, is delighted to see that its efforts are such a huge success. The Chamber staff and volunteers have worked for years to build Twilight-related tourism in this area–and, at least in the early days, heard a fair amount of local resistance and skepticism about its efforts. The 48% increase in lodging tax revenue is a strong indicator that the Chamber’s vision was right on and that it has done an incredible job in promoting this niche market. The massive influx of visitors has been a boon to all sectors of the local economy and has helped to spread the word that Forks and the West End have international appeal as world-class tourist destinations.
Thanks Twilighters!! We owe all of this to you. Let’s keep it going!! Forks, LaPush and the entire West End welcome all Twilight fans and encourage you to stay long enough to check out everything the area has to offer. Our web site–particularly our 5 Day Travel Guide–has lots of ideas about things to see and do while you’re here. This is a a great, low-key time of year to visit, so c’mon up!!

I think the author Stephanie Meyers picked the NW in general and then narrowed it down to select the penninsula area...I mean if you had to avoid the sun...this is where you live! I live in Oregon but grew up in So Cal (sun and beach!), and I am looking forward to coming to Forks in April 2010 for my husband's bday - and to explore the area.

I'm trying to find out what the connection between the Stephenie Meyer and this area of Washington state is. Why is the series set here instead of someplace else?

My husband and I visited Forks in July. While we did initiate the trip because of my infatuation with Twilight, it was the area that we truly fell in love with! The Olympic Peninsula is an incredible vacation destination, and the people in Forks are wonderful people to spend time with! We hit everything on the 5 day guide, and it was all breath taking. We are not outdoor people at all, but with all the surrounding beauty we hiked everyday! We can't wait to come back again!

From Seattle, WA... Love Twilight, but was thinking the producers/directors should do a tad more research on the weather here...I was watching the commentary on how much they actually had to tone down the sun, add rain in scenes, etc...Ya we get rain but actually it NEVER rains that much! And we actually have a lot of nice sunny weather. No one really drinks Rainer beer either... At least not anyone I know!

It's funny...I came to Forks for a three day stay in October. Except, I came as an old fashioned tourist...I came to fish. I sw the signs..."welcome vampires" etc around town...it kind of freaked me out because I had no clue as to the "Twilight thing." I have since become aware as I bought my daughter in law the entire Twilight series of books and recently saw the movie. It was great seeing the movie and proclaiming..."I was there..." Anyway, don't forget about us old geezer tourists who are there for the fishin'...we're human too. Well ..at least most of us...

I live in Sequim, right next to Port Angeles. I am 16 and haven't been to Forks since a field trip in elementary school but me and a friend are going to ride the bus there this weekend. I haven't read the books but I saw the movie and fell in love.
